The Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration Started in the late 19^th century and continued till the end of the first quarter of the 20^th century.

The major objective of many of the expeditions was to be the first party to reach the Geographic South Pole. A feat accomplished by Roald Amundsen during his 1910 – 1912 expedition. Amundsen arrived just 5 weeks ahead of Robert Falcon Scott’s party of the Terra Nova expedition.

Summary of the Timeline

Belgian Antarctic Expedition (1897 to 1899)

Marks the beginning of Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration and was the first expedition to winter in the Antarctic.

Southern Cross Expedition (1898 – 1900)

First party to land on the Great Ice Barrier.

Discovery Expedition (1901 – 1904)

First expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott. Among the crew were many other pioneers of the age including: Ernest Shackleton, Edward Wilson, Frank Wild, Tom Crean and William Lashly.

Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902 – 1904)

Set up first manned meteorological station.

Nimrod Expedition (1907 – 1909)

First expedition led by Ernest Shackleton.

Terra Nova Expedition (1910 – 1912)

Robert Falcon Scott reaches the South Pole only 33 days after Amundsen's South Pole expedition. Scott and his entire party died on return journey.

Amundsen's South Pole expedition (1910 – 1912)

Roald Amundsen and his 4 man team become the first expedition to reach the geographic South Pole, arriving 5 weeks before rival Scott.

Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914 – 1917)

Considered last major expedition of the age, it became an amazing feet of survival and endurance after the party became stranded, forcing them to separate as Shackleton and  others set out in one of the lifeboats in search of rescue.

Shackleton–Rowett Expedition (1921 – 1922)

Last expedition of the age and Shackleton’s last Antarctic mission. Shackleton died on board shortly after the expedition reached the  sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. Timeline unavailable: View the Timeline
